OUR TECHNIQUE

The English Council’s IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Essential Writing Clinic will cultivate all the required knowledge and skills of learners, so they are well primed and confident in taking on the Writing Tasks in the IELTS assessment.

The English Council recognises and understands that the Writing Tasks might be one of the most challenging components within the IELTS assessment, and certain learners may need specialised guidance in this area. This programme is specifically designed to aid such learners through comprehensively covering both Writing Tasks – Situational Essay Writing (Writing Task 1) & Expository Essay Writing (Writing Task 2). Learners will be taught how to strategically prepare for Writing Task 1 & Writing Task 2 within the IELTS assessment, so they excel.

This programme includes precise step-by-step approaches in unpacking and tackling the different types of Situational Essay & Expository Essay questions, so learners meet the four assessment criteria:

 

• Task Achievement/Response

Task Achievement (in Writing Task 1) and Task Response (in Writing Task 2) assess how accurately, appropriately and relevant your response is in meeting the given task requirements, using the minimum of 150 words for Writing Task 1 and 250 words for Writing Task 2.

In Writing Task 1, Task Achievement refers to how well your letter achieves its purpose.

In Writing Task 2, Task Response includes how well-crafted your argument is in response to the given task, including suitable evidence and examples, which may be from your own experience.

 

• Coherence and Cohesion

Coherence and cohesion assess how clear and fluent your writing is, and how you organise ideas and information. It includes structuring and scaffolding your ideas in a logical sequence, using a range of cohesive devices (for example, linking words, pronouns and conjunctions, et cetera) appropriately.

 

• Lexical Resource

Lexical resource assesses the range of vocabulary you have used, and how accurately and appropriately you use it.

 

• Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Grammatical range and accuracy assess the range of grammar you have used and how accurately and appropriately you have used it.

Apart from instilling concepts, learners will also be given ample opportunities to apply what they have learnt and consistently receive feedback to allow for better retention of knowledge and skills.
